Appearing before you is a clock constructed from images made by Katherine Finkelstein from her ongoing piece, she temporarily titles “2017-2020.” On September 16, 2020, every ten minutes, a new image was added to this sequence. Rather than marking linear time, this clock tracked angular speed. Within each ten minute segment, the sun traveled across the sky a distance of 5 suns. The tally started at civil dawn CST and ended after civil dusk CST.

These images were not made in real-time. They were taken over three years, during stints of the artist’s continental US survey. Each photograph makes capitalism’s attempt at paving over ecological interdependence relative to the attention of awe. As a sequence, these images move us through the dusk of human supremacy and sink into a scale of time larger than the quality of miles per hour.
